Three things to look for when buying an oil filter

Automotive All-Stars mobile mechanics recommend the use of genuine quality oil filters when performing a car service, logbook service, or minor service.

  1. Ensure the filter has a anti-drain back valve. This ensures oil is available upon engine cranking i.e cold starts when most wear occurs.
  2. By-pass valve. This allows oil to flow in case of major blockage. Impurities won’t be removed but engine oil will still flow to vital components.
  3. The actual weight of the filter. The heavier the filter the more filter medium present within its housing. Light weight filters tend to block up quickly causing engine damage.

Another thing worth mentioning is that engine bearings are not made of steel so magnets fitted to filters is a waste of time and money. Sounds good though in theory.
